Pete,
No reason you can't remove the hub in situ. I'm just not sure how you're
going to fish the old seal out with that axle running up the middle of
it.
The whole project is not that difficult or time consuming, unless you
decide that you simply must deal with the cosmetic issues while it's out
("Shipwright's Disese").
