Mark,
Let me guess.... The car was a late model with a swing-spring!  Was I
right?  

This seems to be a bit of a problem with these springs.  They tend to
settle on the driver side, causing the left side to sit lower and the
wheel tend to have excessive negative camber.  It is correctable, either
by rearching the spring or buying a new one (about $125).

The play is probably correctable too.  I'd look first at the coupler
that connects the steering shaft to the rack.  If the bolts are loose or
the rubber material is worn, you can either tighten or replace.  If the
play is in the rack, it may mean replacement but there is a backlash
adjustment that might help.
