When my alternator went, it was making a loud clicking/rattling type noise. 
At first, I thought it was something coming from the valves. My dad suggested 
that I put a screwdriver up to my ear (not the sharp end) and put the other 
end on various engine components to see what made the most vibration/loudest 
noise. That is how I found out it was the alternator.
