David
I had the same problems last year and took the same
approach as you i.e.: replacing everything. In the end I
think the biggest problem I had was with the clutch lever
push rod. Mine turned out to be out of an MG Midget and
was too long. The correct one for a 75 Spit is 2-3/8" long
from the centre of the eye to the end of the rod. I also had a
bolt instead of the clutch lever pivot pin but mine was very sloppy
causing some lost motion in the linkage so I replaced it with the
proper pin and retainer. This winter while changing frames on the
car I discovered that the pin had almost walked right out of the top
of the bell housing so be forewarned. My fix for this was to drill
horizontal holes above this pin and drive in split pins to retain it.
I think the problem was wear in the lever body so that the pin and
retainer did not fit tight enough. Also when you bleed the slave
cylinder jack the rear of the car up higher than the front. I did this
and seemed to get more air out of the system than when sitting level.
Hope this helps
Let me know how you make out
