The Japanese have succeeded in the world auto industry because they are
consistently good imitators and offer high build quality. Perhaps they might
make us truly envious if they come up with a 'sports' car with better oil
leaks, better quirks and foibles, better rogue electrics, better oddball
suspensions, better bad panel fits, better tensencies to rust in awkward
places, better ways of losing directional control when you least expect it,
better retro and all the other 'better' things that endear us to our cars.
With the Miata/MX5, I think they've entirely missed the market and all Joe
Public can expect out of Mazda is a car which is utterly predictable, bland,
well finished, everything works consistently well - and its just plain
boring. If they can meet my criteria, I think they'd do rather well! I might
even buy one - especially if it was a stlaight eight called a Doromite.
