I have been off this list for a long time and just recently resubscribed to
ask a question and some advice. I am considering hiring someone in the
Dallas area to get my Spit in running shape. It is a do-it-yourself
restoration that I have been working on sporadically for a few years (I have
3 kids under 8 yrs) but unfortunately we have to move and I haven't
finished. Now I may move it with the household goods but I see this as an
opportunity to get the thing running again (I have obtained approval from my
bos....wife).
The engine and transmission are out and the engine has been rebuilt and is
sitting complete on the engine stand. The tub and hood were removed from
the frame. I braced the door openings before taking it off the frame and on
the passenger side I have replaced the battery box, lower A-post, and floor
pan from the footwell to the kick panel. I have replaced both rear fenders,
the trunk floor and the rear valance. What is remaining is the driver's
side floor pan and some minor welding on the firewall.
What I need is to get the car in running shape so I can get it to my new
residence and finish the detailed part of the restoration. What I was
thinking was to finish the major body work and paint the tub/hood,
strip/paint and refurb the frame, and put the thing back together. I don't
need the interior finished or the top redone or any of the fancy stuff.
Just a seat and a key and maybe the instruments.
I talked with British Auto Specialists over by Ft. Worth and they
discouraged me saying it is not worth the money. That I already knew but I
have owned the car for 20 years and it means a lot to me and my wife. I am
not in it for the money and I plan to throw away a goodly sum to get it
running. Any suggestions on where I can take this car or any other
suggestions?
