Ken,
about 10 years ago I got a change to try my Spitfire Mk1 on dragstrip
with "official" timing. It was fitted then with a 1300cc engine with the
following modifications:
- twin Dellorto DHLA carburettors
- tubular exhaust manifold
- roughly gas-flowed head with about 9.5:1 compression
- about 290 degs cam (according to my memory)
Otherwise it was all standard with std gears, 4.11 diff ratio etc.
1/4 mile time was 17.3 seconds with the end speed 78 mph... doesn't
sound so fast, but that's what real life is... On the other hand I tried
it only once because the car stopped recharging (would you belive with
Lucas?) the battery and I had about 150 miles trip to home.
