Hello list.
I am stuck away from home with a dead spit, and i need your help.
I will try to be as specific as possible regarding my problem and diagnosis so
excuse the length.
The spit is a '78 federal model (his name is Cheech), commision number
#786....(dont remeber the ending). I have had elecrical problems with it from
day one and have been stuck b/4, but I thought i was done with that. Cheech
has a new alternator and a new battery, and i thought that solved the
problems, (previously the IGN. lamp was on and I changed the alternator, then
it died again, I had the Alt. checked and it was bad,so I got a third one,
then a week ago it died, the battery was checked found to be bad so there is a
new one now)
So we get to today, when I was on the highway the car didn't sound right, as
if the batt. was so weak it couldn't fire sparks, this was somewhat confirmed
when the tach and speedometer that usually point in the same direction in 4th.
did not.
So when I got to where I'm now, I put a voltmeter on the batt. and noticed it
was only at 11.9, when the key would be turned to on it would drain rapidly.
So i disconected everything from the positive post(starter solenoid?) and
started plugging things back in. Nothing would cause drain except the 2 large
brown wires. One wire would not drain if the alternator socket (which
contains brown wires) was disconnected, the other would drain no matter what.
So now the car is dead, I am stuck and I need your help finding what is
shorting so I can get home.

Sorry for the length and thanks in advance.

p.s. to top it all the IGN. lamp is burnt
