Ryan,

Sorry I didn't give you very clear info the first time it was strictly from
memory. I just went out and checked for sure. Heres the deal. There are
three clamps that need to be loosened. The first is a couple inches behind
the dash. It is a U shaped clamp that hold the steering column in place. It
is held by two allen screws. Loosen both of the allens but there is no need
to remove them. Next, move farther forward on the steering column and you
should see another U shaped clamp a few inches before you get to the gas
pedal, this serves the same purpose as the first one. Again loosen the two
bolts (probably about 1/2 inch hex head bolts), do not remove them, loosen is
enough. Last, about 4-5 inches farther forward, just about even with the gas
pedal is the last clamp. This one is a little different. It does not attach
the column to the rest of the car. Rather, it connects the two pieces of the
column together. This clamp is where the actual adjustment is possible (if
you turn the wheel you will see this clamp rotate as well). Again, just
loosen the two 1/2 inch hex head bolts. Now you can crawl out from under the
dash and pull on the steering wheel and it should move in and out until you
get it where you want. Then simply tighten up all the bolts you loosened
before. You should be sure not to pull the wheel back too far or you wont
have much grip on the two sections of the column. I would recommend you pull
it out as far as it will go, then push it back in to where you want it. That
way you know your not right at the end.

Good luck. This tidbit comes from a '73 so it should be the same for your '72
