Might be the pressure plate - only the randomness does not make sense.

I have a problem with a 72 Mk 4. Occasionally the clutch will not
disengage completely. I had thought that it had something to do with
releasing the pedal part way and then pressing it again, but I think it is
actually random. When this happens it is hard to get in or out of gear and
if the road is level and it is in gear the car will creep forward. It will
go away just as suddenly as it came. does not happen often, but when
it
does it is a pain. It is NOT a thrust washer problem. I have checked that
several times (just to make sure) and I always get the same answer that
is
within spec.
The master cylinder and slave have been overhauled with girling kits.
The
fluid level has not changed at all since the overhaul so I don't think
there could be a leak. When I got the car (June) the hydraulics did not
work at all so there is no way to know if this is an old or new problem.
The clutch feels and works fine otherwise. I don't know the actual
condition of the clutch since I have not yet had to go inside the bell
housing.
Any ideas?
