Welding on engine blocks is a very iffy proposition. The
whole block has to be brought up to a very high pre-heat, then
the repair made, and then the block encased in lime to cool
VERY slowly.
Otherwise, the block warps from the uneven cooling. I have
an example of the latter loafing around my garage. The Spit
engine threw a rod, and the rod hole was welded, but it wouldn't
hold a head gasket since the deck was warped during the
welding, even though the work appears well-attempt. (the weld
bead is very well done, it wasn't a hack job)
Anyways. it's worth a shot if you aren't afraid of
stripdown and rebuild.
