I use a graphite lube called "Cable-Eaze", purchased many years ago from a
local auto parts store.
Best procedure is to relase the cable from both ends, pull out and wipe off
the core, then re-lubricate. Careful! The graphite will stain clothes and
carpet.
These days I use a pea-size blob of synthetic grease "TriboLube" on each
end, to dampen vibrations.
