Well not literally, of course.   Here's the symptom:

My '79 Spit 1500 (with a freshly rebuilt Zenith-Stromberg carb, and a
catalytic converter) will usually backfire when up-shifting over 3000 RPM.
It is most likely to happen after the car has been idling a minute or so.

I am running a Crane XR700 electronic ignition, timing is set to spec
according to the sticker under the hood, and is rock-solid at idle.

What is the most likely culprit...that %$#*&@$ carb (needle not settling
into the jet all the way?) or something else with the distributor
(centrifugal weights/springs etc?), or, some other Spitfire quirk that I
have not yet had the pleasure of rectifying (timing chain or the like)?
