Alternators don't tend to die when they are sitting, but battery connections
love to corrode with lack of use, especially if there is not a good seal
between the connector and post, so most likely that is the only problem in this
case. As far as the alternators being of poor quality, I personally have not
experienced a single problem with my 95's unit. When I rebuilt it at 75k
(preventative maintenance), I found it had one dead diode, but no other issues,
and it was charging the battery quite nicely for being driven just 2.5 miles to
work each day. Of the 7 other Taurii and Sables that have graced my extended
family, none ever had battery or alternator issues, so I'd have to consider
them decent components. YMMV, obviously.
