OK, here is the background to my question. My alternator took a dump last
week, taking the battery with it. I happened to be near a Goodyear store and
they installed the replacements. About 2 days later, I notice that my
headlights and dash ligths were, for lack of a better term, surging in a
rythmic pattern. The dash lights will "surge" even if the headlights are not
on. Also, the AC display goes completly out like it did when the alternator
went belly up initially. On top of that the AC only blows warm now. It was
ice cold before. I am thinking the alt. is not putting out enuf juice to kick
the compressor on. I had the Goodyear shop check it to see if the alt was
charging and the tech said it was, but I don't know if if completely trust his
knowledge of SHO's. Once the tech checked the new alt., the shop manager
hypothesized that maybe the idle sensor is fluctuating which is causing the
dash lights/headlights to surge. Again, I have never been mistaken for a
mechanic so I am differing to my SHO brothers and sisters for a little
insight.

Pretty much what Dave said. If the alternator is the wrong physical
size, it will mess the belt up, but that's pretty obvious. As long as
it
fits, if it's lower amperage, it will simply not be able to supply as
much power and will draw more from the battery based on how many loads
you place on it. A higher amperage alternator will simply not have to
work as hard, but I doubt you'll run into that, aren't MTX alternators
like 120A? So yeah, just make sure you check up on the battery often if
you get a weaker amp. You should be fine with anything down to 90A,
though. Anything lower, and I'd be worried.

A car will run without any alternator at all, for awhile. So that's
not
really the issue. The issue is will it fit? I don't know. If it
fits,
it will most likely work. It may not be the exact same output as the
SHO alternator, but it should still work.
