took a break from preparation for the convention to take the family and
grandkids to watch the world champion Cavaliers from Rosemont IL
practice tonight in Morton IL (8 miles from my house).
They were travelling between Chicago and Alton. They came in about 3am
Thursday, slept till maybe 8am, then went to various locations
throughout the town to practice the various groups. At 6pm, they
gathered at the high school football field and had a three hour practice.
At 10pm after a final run-through of the entire 11 minute show, they
were packing up, going to eat a meal, then drive to Alton where they
camp out in another gymnasium in sleeping bags at 3am again, before
getting up and doing it again. This weekend will be a full competition
in Indianapolis, so Friday overnight they will head to Indy for a
Saturday competition.
The Caveliers began in 1948 and have many championships to their name,
including something like four out of the last five years.
Average age of the corps is 20 with the youngest still in High School
(16?) and the oldest at 22 in college.
Not often you get to watch the champs practice and put on a free
performance.
If you have not seen a Drum Corps International performance, you really
should try to take one in.
