Thanks to John Stout for meeting up with us (Jan and I) at the
MidAmerica Motorworks big annual air cooled VW meet. Must have been
over a thousand air cooled VW's there.
Big surprise was being buzzed by a WWII fighter, I didn't catch the
brand, but it was privately owned and looked like a Grumman hellcat,
tigercat, wildcat or skyrocket. He buzzed the grounds pretty low. I
can now relate to people in europe being scared when these things
approached low and fast. You hear it coming but only seconds before,
and then it comes overhead shaking everything in sight! This was part
of the show put on by MidAmerica.
We didn't stay very long, after lunch we walked the grounds, attended a
seminar on maintenance, and just looked over all the VW's. We drove
Jan's 78 Champaign Edition Convertible.
This was our first long trip with the car after buying it a couple of
years ago from Jan's mom. I was surprised that we only got about 20
mpg! Guess fuel injected VW's aren't economy cars or the car needs a
serious tune. But several other owners we talked to said about 20 was
the norm. I seem to remember doing better with my 64 VW in college.
Thanks to John for making the trip in his Gen IV SHO (Mazda 6)
