If you have access to a welder, you could construct your own basket from 
the wire mesh decking used with commercial pallet racks.  That stuff will
support thousands of pounds and goes pretty cheap on the secondhand market.
If you live near a big city, chances are you can even find some listed on 
craigslist (check the 'business' and 'materials' categories).
