True. Every manufacturer sets out oil specifications for their
engines. Some oils will state on the bottle, "meets Ford spec 1234, Chevy
spec 556", etc. In my 2001 TDI, I use Shell Rotella-T 5W-40 which meets VW
spec 505.00 for my car. There are actually quite a few oils that meet the
505.00 spec, so I can choose from several.
In newer VW diesels, I'd need an oil that meets their 507.00
standards due to the particulate filter in those cars.
