Jim - If you are after an easy way to add a little bit to extend the 
drywall, get some mesh tape and setting type drywall compound.  It sets 
chemically in the time specified on the package.  I'd probably recommend 
mixing up the 45 minute compound.  It comes as powder at the home 
centers along side the drywall mud.  It is stronger, harder, and doesn't 
shrink compared to regular premixed joint compound.   The mesh tape will 
span the seam and help prevent cracking.

If the mix you are using starts to set, toss it or push it in the deep 
areas as a backing.  If you add water after it starts to set, it won't 
work well.
