There has been considerable discussion in any number of state legislatures
regarding the "desirability" of collecting state/local sales tax on mail
order and internet sales. AFAIK, nothing has been done, at least nothing
widespread.
That said, if a company has a sales presence in you state (Texas in my case)
and you buy directly from the company (Apple, Microsoft, Sears, big
businesses or even small one operating only in your state), the seller
should collect the tax. That's why many of us buy our big ticket items from
outfits like Amazon or smaller out of state vendors.
