Yet another vote for the Dyson. We've abused ours horribly for the past six
years and we've been incredibly pleased with it. My wife couldn't vacuum
before and now can because of the filters. And it does an amazing job of
pulling up cat hair.

I second the Dyson (other than the whole not wanting to spend a fortune
part). As Patton noted, they work wonders with pet hair. We have 2 dogs and
were going through quality, brand-name vacuum cleaners (canister and
upright) at a rate of 1 per year. We've had the Dyson for a number of years
(5 plus, I think) with no problems whatsoever.

My wife loves her Dyson. I am not sure it would be worth the money to
you, but she used to complain about a string of different brands
before. We were on a every 2 year replacement cycle as she was
battling dog and cat hair. After getting the Dyson 6 years ago, she
hasn't complained. That's compelling enough for me!
I did save some money by getting a refurbished unit.
