A few years ago I installed a new storm door from Lowe's (Pella brand). The
door is full glass with a small aluminum border so it weighs quite a bit and,
thus, exerts a fair amount of torque on the piano-style hinges.
Fast forward to today and I've noticed that the non-hinge side of the door is
sagging around 1/8" from where it was when it was installed. It seems a
considerable amount of play has developed in the hinges: if I lift up on the
door handle, I can lift the storm door back to its original position. The
wooden frame to which the hinges are screwed remains plumb and I don't see any
deformation in the screw holes so the slop seems to be in the hinges themselves.
Anybody seen this before? I know I can probably fix it by adding a shim to
the lower hinge screws but if the hinge itself is deforming, this seems like a
temporary fix at best. Is there a better way to repair? Replacing the hinges
might not be feasible since I seem to recall they're an integral part of the
door assemmbly.
Thanks
Jimmie
