Does it have the US emissions and safety stickers on it? If not, getting it
certified will cost many times the value of the car.
If it does have them, you may still need to post a bond equal to the value;
plus the emission controls (including the engine) must be "restored to it's
original EPA-certified configuration".
As Ed said, I wouldn't even think about it for something as plebian as a 79
Rabbit. Just the required "DOT Registered Importer" is likely to charge you
more than you could possibly save on the car.
