You can get Midland FRS/GMRS for $20 for two from Amazon
and a bunch of other places.

I've used other FRS radios and they work well for keeping in
touch at sporting events.
For riding bikes together, I just ride with the other person and
talk to them like normal. Just go single file when
the road's narrow and there's traffic. The rider in front points
out road obstacles and signals stops.
