I'm positive my cell carrier hates my unlimited net sub at $30/month, but

Depending on where you're going, a phone-based system might be the best way
to go. (particularly if you've already got the phone.) On the other hand,
if you're somewhere (mountain west, for instance) with poor cell phone
coverage, it might not be.
[And, side point. I'm sure your cell phone company is making money off your
$30 data plan. The marginal cost to provide data is vanishingly close to
zero.
