I have a Garmin Nuvi 760, which was near the top of their line when I bought
it, but isn't anymore. (I am not even sure they sell that model anymore.) In
general, I am happy with it, but the battery doesn't last very long when not
plugged into the cigarette lighter. I don't know if other brands or models
are better, but I would not recommend this one for running only off of the
battery.

BTW: For what its worth, I recently visited a friend who had a new
voice-activated Garmin 855. Voice-activated commands seems like a great idea
for a GPS, but I was not impressed with his system. It seemed like it was
more trouble than it was worth, and that was in his modern SUV. I imagine it
would be totally useless in a noisy LBC or other classic car.
