[Shop-talk] preservative for cut post ends

I'm putting up a redwood deck railing. The design is such that most of the 
posts are completely covered, but I've got a miter joint at corners, which will 
allow water to enter the cut end.

I know that there are lots of products on the market for treating such ...
but I also know that many don't work. 

What say ye?
