"Frost-free" is actually marketing-speak for "self-defrosting" ... so very
likely your root problem is in the self-defrosting part. Could be the timer
or wiring; but when mine did that, the heating element (tape) itself had
gone open circuit.
Since frost makes a pretty good insulator, you might want to consider fixing
it rather than just living with occasionally having to defrost.
