How does your current adjustment work ? If it's the usual castellated nut &
cotter pin, you could just drill a second hole for the cotter pin at right
angles to the first one. Or use a Nyloc nut.
But too loose by only 1/2 flat shouldn't hurt anything.
Marks on the races would be grounds for replacement, in my book. Better to
replace the bearings a little sooner than wait for them to fail & take the
axle with them.
