Could be. They do sometimes make strange noises when bubbles of vapor go
through the expansion valve.

If it's low enough to not put any liquid through the valve, then you won't
get cold air. But there's a sizeable zone where some liquid gets through,
meaning some cold air.

Normally not an issue with AC-powered units, as they don't mix oil with
refrigerant like some automotive systems do. But it's been a long time
since I worked in the field, so ????
