I've had pretty good luck using Behr's silicone-based cedar-colored deck
stain. I think the can says it's good for 5-6 years but in my experience,
the water stops beading up at around year 3. By comparison, Thompson's stuff
stopped beading later the same year when I tried it.
Only problem is the Behr stuff is pretty pricey. As I recall, I paid a little
more than $20/gallon.
