Sure magnesium can be welded.  You need to put it in an oxygen-free
atmosphere./  A little company near me is named "AMS" because all they do is
weld Aluminum, Magnesium, and Stainless.  And what a clean operation it is
too.  He welded one of my brake cylinders for the Cub a few years ago.
