Quick intro: I've been on and off the MG list for over 10 years; an MG
owner for over 15. Also experience with Jags, alfas, fiats, and a
sunbeam.
I have, more or less by accident, a 1991 Toyota Camry with FI and a
slushbox. It's my first experience with FI, auto transmissions, and
japanese cars in general; so I find myself at a bit of a loss at times.
It's a reasonably good car, but I'm looking for some advice because it
hesitates or stutters at times -- mostly noticeable at low speed and
low throttle openings, when it drops in to top gear. It will stutter a
little if I don't press on the gas enough to kick down a cog.
Anyway, I don't even know if this is a motor problem or a transmission
problem. It isn't temp dependent (car temp or ambient) as far as I can
tell, except that when the car is really cold (below freezing, the
first half-mile or so from a cold start) it won't shift in to top gear.
But the stutter can still happen in those circumstances, just not in
top gear.
I can think of a few dozen things it might be, but I would just be
taking a shot in the dark. Any number of sensors in the FI loop, some
of the voodoo inside the transmission, maybe even something as simple
as a cable adjustment. But I have no idea where to begin. The haynes
manual isn't particularly helpful, as far as I can tell. I've sprayed
some carb/injector cleaner stuff on the throttle body, and I gave it a
basic tuneup over a year ago (k/n af, fuel filter,
cap/rotor/plugs/wires.) It has 240,000 miles on it.
Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks,
M.
