A few weeks ago I posted a question about a problem I was having with
low water pressure on my well supplied house water.
My thanks to all who gave me advice. It helped me diagnose my problem
and solve it. I won't burden you with all details, but I will give you
some keys to the diagnosis and the ultimate solution.
First, I bought a pressure test gauge at HD that screws on a sill cock
and enable you to check pressures at various location which helps to
localize the problem and measure improvement.
Here's what I found. First, the bladder in my 30 year old pressure tank
had a small leak and over a long period of time the pressure tank wasn't
giving full boost when water was being drawn, like flushing a toilet.
Second, there were three small pieces of clay that must have come
through pump and lodged in the entrance to the valve for the whole house
filter. They probably were restricting the filter by at least 50%
regardless of whether the filter was in service or by-pass position. I
replace the pressure tank and cleaned the prescreen on the whole house
filter.
I now have 60# of pressure with nothing running and when we flush a
toilet the pressure at other points in the system stay around a very
respectable 40#. Now when I take a shower it feels a lot like standing
in front of a pressure washer.
