The house we bought has the gas (propane) water heater in the attic. It is not 
where I would have thought to install one but it does work fine. It is sitting 
in a low basin with a drain leading out - in the event it should ever develop a 
slow leak that should prevent the ceiling from being damaged. A catastrophic 
leak would be a problem I'm sure...
