Have you tried running it with the gas cap a bit loose?  I had a
weed-eater that did that once.  The cap was also the vent to the gas
tank, and it was plugged.  The engine starved for fuel since the gas
tank "pulled a vacuum".  A new cap with the filter/vent working fixed
the problem.
