Not necessarily. Much of the time, it's marketing, not engineering.
You may have been around long enough to remember the last round of the
"service interval wars" in the 1960s, starting with "permanently
lubricated ball joints" and winding up with Ford, who eventually claimed
you never had to change the oil, just pop a new filter on every couple
of years and top it off.
The OEMs would prefer your vehicle doesn't fail during its warranty
period, which costs them money. If it lasts much past that point, they
view it as a lost sale for a replacement vehicle.
Either way, they're not concerned with *my* best interests.
