Exactly--many stations then were selling gasohol, and with rotten 
tanks and lots of flooding from heavy rains, it happens. The owner 
claimed that he bought fuel from only one station, which claimed to 
have "certified tanks." At that time, I don't think Florida had a 
certification program for underground tanks (most states now do, 
because of groundwater concerns), and there were a bunch of older 
tanks in use.

The bet was that the owner bought a new Toyota carburetor if I found 
anything in the tank other than gasoline, because that would have 
voided warranty on that item. I'd rebuilt the carb previously, so I 
knew what was in the fuel....
