There's a very good reason for this. Typical shop air compressors are 
insanely top-heavy. A vertical configuration is not remotely safe to be 
around unless it is bolted down. More than once, I've seen horizontal 
units (5HP and 10HP on skids) flip clear out of a cornering pickup 
truck.
