I'll stick to lowering the load with the ram.  When you are under the car
and the cable breaks.........how long before they find you?  Sorry but one
of the first rules in safety is don't stand (Lay) under a load.

for example, I bought the HF 2 ton engine crane (cherry picker) in the mid
80's after the same analysis as the gantry crane, then added on an electric
hoist and pulleys to allow me to raise and lower drivetrain on crane while
under the car and aligning the mounts/ bellhousing/ whatever...much easier
than jumping up and down to use the hydraulic ram; the ram still works the
boom, and a cable over pulleys raises the load.
