When we encountered similar symptoms with a tub of about the same age, the
real problem was that the wooden boards supporting the tub bottom were
rotting. The tub itself had no real strength of it's own, instead relying
upon the underlying wooden floor to support it.
In our case, small leaks in the shower surround had, over time, leaked water
that slowly rotted the boards.
