A couple of footnotes aimed at concrete floor maintenance:
My experience with the muratic acid etching process taught me that one can't
be too careful with the venting or the protection of bare metal in the area.
. . I received a nice coat of surface rust on some of my machine tools.
I also found that pouring on the acid and attempting to broom it arould
does not work well . . apparently, the acid is "spent" immediately on
touching the concrete and that which is swept to a new area does no etching.
Instead, use a big ol' plastic sprinkler can in order to get "new" acid to
every square inch of concrete.
The floor I restored was terrible: dings, flakes. cracks, welding damage
and hammer tracks. After I got it clean and etched, I used a couple of
gallons of regular Bondo body putty to get it smooth.
The people I talked with weren't THAT happy with the esoteric epoxy
coatings. Not only did they still damage pretty easily, they were expensive
and expensive to recoat. I settled for a good brand of Alkyd garage floor
paint which rolls on for about $ .05 foot. I just patch it when it lifts
and scratches and roll a new coat on the high wear area every few years.
Free advice and worth every penny.
