Funny, my manual says "10lb sledge" on the side of it... =) Works every
time, and it isn't brand-specific so I don't have to waste valuable time
searching for literature.
On the phone issue - the alarm system will run your house lines through
it. The lines at your "grey box" with dialtone, are the ones from the
phone company. How it's interrupted from the rest of the house is up to
the installer, without seeing it that's hard to say. However you are on
the right track, so some basic troubleshooting and rewiring (hint: Don't
grab both wires of the live side at the same time, especially when someone
is trying to call you!) should have you squealing-alarm-free in no time.
