Not to belabor the point, but have you ever tried buying 12 BA brass nuts,
let alone in a 2mm square format ?

To answer the original question, I would be try to make a "nut tap" in 12BA.
Turn a length of drill rod to the proper OD for a male 12BA thread (using a
follow rest), put a taper on the end, single point the threads (finish with
a 12BA die if you have one), harden and temper it, then grind two flutes.
With care and luck, you should be able to get 2" or so of useable tap.  Then
drill your brass bar stock, tap as long a section as you can, and slice nuts
out of it with a slitting saw.
