Diesel fuel has a more 'oily' base and has no volatile additive like the
MTBE or alcohol in gasoline. So it requires a higher temperature to
vaporize. The 'formula' that seems to work is about 8 oz per 10 gallons
of gasoline. Frankly it's the volatile nature of the alcohol and MTBE
that is causing older cars to vapor lock. Remember older cars were not
manufactured when we had this type of fuel. Ah, the 'good old days'
with leaded fuel, and smog.
I drive an MGB V8 daily. When you stuff a V8 into an MGB all sorts of
odd things happen. One of the issues is restarting after a short period
of sitting. The under hood temperatures get so high, and the heat
transfer from the engine to the carburetor is so rapid, the fuel can
boil (you can actually hear it percolate). Adding a bit of diesel fuel
can help avoid that problem. Obviously that isn't a convenient solution,
in my case I added a phenolic (sp?) spacer/insulator between the carb
and the intake. That seems to be enough to solve the issue.
