Actually, most oil bath aircleaners DID route the air through the oil reservoir
on its way to the mesh or fiber matrix in the body of the cleaner.
One of the several drawbacks to the oilbath cleaner was the possibility that, if
service was neglected, the trapping of the dust could eventually serve to raise
the level of the oil to such a point that the now highly abrasive compound of
oil and dirt could be ingested through the coir or mesh filter unit and enter
the engine with predictable results. Another spectacular disadvantage of oil
bath air filters was discovered when Massey-Ferguson placed a forward facing
airscoop on the nose of the MF65 tractor. While being hauled by a truck, the
70 or 80 mph wind stream could on occasion force air through the oilbath at
such a rate that oil would be blown up through the intake system of the diesel
engine. There's no throttle plate in a diesel, the oily air could blow right
through the
engine and out any handy open exhaust valve!
Imagine the surprise on the first startup of the engine when the light weight
oil made the diesel engine race ungoverned and with no reaction to the throttle
OR
the fuel shut-off valve until the oil burned out.
One tractor DID use a water filled "bong-type" aircleaner
at least for a while. The Fordson used such a system until it was discovered
that the water would freeze in the winter and crack the cast-iron chamber
allowing dusty
air to quickly wreck the motor . . . Victims said it was a Ford plot to sell
parts!!!
Thank goodness for dry air filters!
