I've looked into doing this for my own woodshop, but haven't quite
gotten around to it.
What I read then was that bigger isn't always better. You want the
velocity to be high enough to keep the dust flying in the air through
the whole tube, and that means that sometimes a narrower tube is better.
Woodworkingtools.com (no financial interest, never bought from them)
lists a formula in article 4 relating CFM to hose size.

Since the vacuum is essentially low pressure high volume air, the ducts
need to be large and have joints that don't interfere with air flow.
Otherwise you get a serious vacuum drop. I'd go with 4" except maybe
for runs to individual machines if they don't have large flow
requirements. You also need the special large-radius joints. IIRC they
are not quite the same size as standard PVC pipe.
