Problem solved. While getting my mity vac out in preparation to do brake work,
I found the brand new set of pads I had not yet installed previously. Seems in
a rush last time, I had put on some pads that were already better than 50% worn
to get the truck back on the road! That explains why they needed changing so
quickly.
Left and right were both equally shot and shoes need changing too, so things
seem to be operating properly. There is a general concensus that these
vehicles do go through brakes relatively quickly.

Thanks to everyone for their ideas/info.

It was nice to have something be easy for a change. I recently lost 5th gear
in my Dodge 1 ton w/five speed manual. Seems there is a known problem that a
nut will back off and allow fifth gear to slip back to the point that it won't
engage. I guess it could have been worse, a quick drop of the tranny and
reinstall and it is good to go.
