This is dangerous if done with an oil lubricated compressor. A normal "wet" type of compressor will produce an air stream with hydrocarbons, and CO. Companies like SAS (Survival Air Systems) sell filters that will produce breathable air from standard compressors, but these systems cost as much as standalone supplied air systems, in large part due to the cost of the required CO monitor. The filter runs $200-$300, and the CO monitor is $400-$500.
